Mount Holly Monthly Meeting was established in 1776 by Burlington Quarterly Meeting out of Burlington Monthly Meeting. In 1827, after the Hicksite Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, the Meeting split into Hicksite and Orthodox branches. The Orthodox Meeting was discontinued in 1828 ; its members were transferred to Burlington Monthly Meeting (Orthodox). The Quaker community in Charleston, South Carolina, was never very large. The last meeting house was destroyed in the great fire of 1861, and in 1876 an act of legislature was passed allowing the Quakers to sell the lot to benefit the Society of Friends in South Carolina. The property was leased, and the money used to build meeting houses in other places. The original property was sold in 1967 to the county of Charleston.
